Justin Levitt is a professor of constitutional law and the law of democracy at Loyola Law School, Los Angeles, and a recognized national expert on election law. His work has included extensive research into pressing issues of election law and practice; assistance to federal and state administrative and legislative bodies with responsibility over elections; participation as amicus curiae in significant cases around the country; and litigation as counsel for parties seeking to compel states to comply with their obligations under federal law and the Constitution.
Professor Levitt has published extensively on election law, and maintains the website All About Redistricting (www.allaboutredistricting.org). He has been invited to testify before several U.S. Senate committees, the U.S. Civil Rights Commission, and several state legislative committees; his research has been cited extensively in the media and the courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court.
Professor Levitt has served in various capacities for several presidential campaigns, including as the National Voter Protection Counsel in 2008, helping to ensure that millions of citizens could vote and have those votes counted. He has also worked as in-house counsel to the country’s largest independent voter registration and engagement operations, and at several civil rights and civil liberties nonprofits, including the Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law. Professor Levitt served as a law clerk to Judge Stephen Reinhardt of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.
